operating system
Windows
Is a graphical interface operating system. It controls many graphical things on your computer such as the taskbar, start menu etc. It was a powerful high level language based processor- independent multiprocessing.
Benefits of windows:
-Windows introduced the pop up blocker for internet explorer.
-It can be used everywhere at school, work offices and homes.
-Lots of software's and games are developed for windows.
Drawbacks:
- It insecure; Many viruses are targeted to hit Microsoft programs.
- It has very little control over your files.

Linux
Is a Unix-like operating system, Brought together under the free and open source software development and distribution.
Benefits of Linux:
You get fewer viruses, It will not slow down your computer if it's an old computer. Linux has many version that are designed to do specific tasks.
Its also stable, it rarely crashes but when it does, the whole system normally does not slow down. Linux can also be used on older computers.
Drawbacks:
- There are fewer software selections.
- People who like gaming may find that Linux offers them a much more limited range.
- Not all software's are compatible. Software developers often don't make their programs available to Linux. - Also there are smaller peripheral hardware drivers, for example printer, scanner, etc.

Mac-OS
Mac- OS is a graphicals user interface developed by Apple inc.
Benefits:
Mac- Os gives you more control over your files when your computer accesses the internet and very few or no viruses are programmed for OS.
Drawbacks:
You cannot upgrade the Mac operating system. Each time you need to buy a new one, Which means it will be more expensive for users.

DOS
Disk operating system is used to give commands to the computer. It is a program used to manage
all the other programs that run on the computer system. It is a way for you and your computer to interact directly. The system is entirely case insensitive so commands are more easily performed.
Benefits:
It allows direct access to most hardware's. It give you more direct control of the processes. Also it runs on much smaller system which means it will boor much faster than any other window versions.
Drawbacks:
- Mac- OS does not support graphics user interference.
- There are very few new programs available therefore you will need to be able to write programs.

Two different operating system we could install in school
The two different operating system which we could use in schools are windows and Linux.
Windows could be installed in schools because it's a graphical interface operating system which controls many graphical things on the computer such as a taskbar, start menu and many more. There are much wider range of software programs, utilities and games for windows. Windows is an easy operating system to use, therefore it will be suitable to install in school.
There are many advantages of using Windows for example it allows you to group together computers and easily share media, files and other devices such as printers between computers. This is all done through Home Group. Windows can be upgraded which means it is not expensive as you don't have yo but it again. Whereas you cannot upgrade Mac operating system, each time you will have to but it which makes it expensive for the users. Windows is good because it had introduced the pop up blocker for internet explorer which disables the advertisement windows that you see while using a web browser. This operating system can multi task.
Microsoft words and excel are programs that everyone uses in school, It has also been proven to be reliable and easy to use. Windows is the most used operating system in the world, this means most students will be using it at home which means they are more used to using Windows than any other operating systems. They would find it hard if they use any other operating systems such as Mac.
Linux is also a good operating system to install in schools because there are fewer viruses and will not slow down the computer and it rarely crashes, even if it's on an old one, therefore when they are using the computer to do their work they won't have to take time. When it crashes the whole system doesn't normally go down. It makes older computers useful again.
Linux provides a high performance on networks it can handle large number of users simultaneously. However there are some disadvantages of installing Linux in school as some of the hardware's that are being produced are not compatible with Linux. However by installing Linux or Windows students will get a better understanding of how Windows, Linux and other operating systems which are being installed work.
By installing Linux in school students will be able to use free software's which will also be beneficial for the school as they will be saving more money. Linux for new users is not as easy to use as windows because Linux gives the users more control, therefore the students will find it hard to adapt to it as it will take them time to get used to it.
Having limited window programs which are not able to run on Linux for example Microsoft, internet explorer and many more. However there are other ways of accessing the internet for example using Google Chrome or Mozilla FireFox. With these limited access to softwares it will affect the students at school because if they needed to search things for their work then they wouldn't be able to.
Purpose of an operating system, How it is used and how it helps users
The purpose of an operating system is to manage the hardware and software resources. The resources which it manages are the processor, memory , disk space. The type of operating system are a multi-user which allows two or more users to run programs at the same time. Mainframes and minicomputers are multi-user systems.
Another type is multiprocessing which allows programs to run on more than one computer.
Multiprocessing is complicated because it needs to allocate resources to complete processes in a reasonable manner. The operating system which supports multiprocessing are: Mac- OS x, Linux, Unix, Windows, Be-OS and VMS.
It is also a multitasking operating system which means it allows more than one program to run concurrently. Multitasking can be pre-emptive which the operating system slices the CPU time and gives one slot to each of the program, the other type is cooperative which relies on each process to give time to other processes. Real time system responds to inputs instantly, it allows several programs to runsimultsneously. Operating systems such as DOS and Unix are not real time. Real time operating system is quick and has a predictable response to events. Real time can also be classifies as multi-user system as they enable multiple user to access a computer though the sharing of time.
Multi threading allows different parts of a single program to run concurrently. The program allows it to operate faster on computer systems that have multiple CPU's
An operating system allows you to communicate with computer hardware's in an interactive war. Without an operating system you will not be able to tell the computer to do anything and it wouldn't have any instructions to follow.
The roles of an operating system is to provide a Graphical user interface (GUI). It has the ability to interact with users in more complicated ways, For example the operating system tells the processor what to do. It manages the memory and allows you and programs to interact with all the components, users can interact with the operating system through command line interface (CLI) and GUI (graphical user interface. An operating system also serves a variety of purposes.
The purpose of an operating system is to organise and control hardware and software devices. It helps the user interface with the hardware through giving commands by a keyboard or an input device or by directly interacting with it through giving commands by a keyboard or an input device or by directly interacting with it through a graphical user interface. An operating system combines a system's devices into a single platform. An operating system manages the hardware and software resources of the system. The resource include s memory, processor and disk pace in a desktop computer. By dealing with the hardware it provides a stable and consistent way for application.
The operating system help users, as without an operating system they will have to do everything themselves and won't be able to use the computer. It helps the user as it passes your command to the programs and communicates the output of the program back to you. It also keeps the different programs running properly.
